It’s the early 1970s, just before the Chilean coup to overthrow Salvador Allende, and two CIA agents find themselves on a side trip to Easter Island. With a lifetime of experience in US foreign interventions, Chris (John Malkovich) is an aging officer in charge of mentoring Lee (Sam Rockwell), his well-intentioned protégé who listens keenly as the men explore the island’s exquisite scenery. When they cross paths with a pair of rebellious young students (Mariana di Girolamo and Ailín Salas), Chris begins to look back philosophically on his life as a spy, which unsettles Lee. Secrets, conspiracies, and moral quandaries are all around them, after all, and the men can’t trust anyone easily, including each other. With a cast rounded out by Steve Buscemi as the agents’ handler, Tom Waits as Chris’ brother, and Parker Posey as Lee’s wife, Wild Horse Nine is an incisive story with a sly commentary on the contemporary political climate.
