Who We Are:
A Chronicle of Racism in America
(2021 / US / Directed by Emily & Sarah Kunstler)
50-60 years after the Civil Rights movement came to prominence, where are we today? Centered on lectures from criminal defense/civil rights lawyer Jeffrey Robinson, Who We Are draws a stark timeline of anti-Black racism in the United States. From slavery to the modern myth of a post-racial America, Robinson asks all of us to re-examine who we are, where we came from, and who we want to be.
Combining Robinson’s personal story with historical and present-day archival footage, as well as with insights from Black changemakers and eyewitnesses to history, Who We Are asks its viewers to listen with fresh ears rather than to assume one’s education is complete. From a hanging tree in Charleston, South Carolina to a walking tour of the origins of slavery in Colonial New York, to the site of a 1947 lynching in rural Alabama, the film brings history to life, exploring the enduring legacy of white supremacy and our collective responsibility to overcome it. Eloquent and heartfelt, the film is not an answer, but a challenge to analyze, reframe, and reinvigorate our discussions and our goals.
