“a wonderous work… that enlightens and informs but that is also ravishing to behold.” – Leslie Felperin, The Hollywood Reporter

Based on the best-selling book by Naoki Higashida, the reason i jump is an immersive cinematic exploration of neurodiversity that shares experiences of nonverbal people on the autistic spectrum from around the world. Dispelling misconceptions about a community that’s often unheard, the film blends Higashida’s revelatory insights with intimate portraits of five remarkable young people, opening a window into their sensory universes.

In Britain, a teenager experiences his past and his present simultaneously. In India, a young woman channels her perceptions into vibrant drawings. In the U.S., best friends are allies and confidantes who communicate with each other and with their families via letterboards. And in Sierra Leone, a woman and her parents navigate life in a society where people on the autistic spectrum are still frequently accused of witchcraft or possession by superstitious elders. Nimbly switching between different lenses and sonic streams, Rothwell invites viewers inside the psychological isolation and overwhelming sensory awareness felt by these individuals, as well as into their cathartic breakthroughs in expression and connection with others. As emotionally piercing as it is beautiful to behold, his film is a masterclass in communication for anyone ready to listen.
