Showtimes April 11 - 17:
When Tom lands in Buenos Aires to take up a teaching position, he finds his students as politically divided as the city they live in. The headmaster (Jonathan Pryce) insists his school simply keep calm and carry on, which suits Tom just fine. When a coup d’etat shuts down the school, Tom rather nonchalantly slips away to neighboring Urugay for a little break, in fact, in search of a romantic foray. While there, a walk along the beach leads him to cross paths with an oil-drenched penguin, and he rescues the bird in a grand gesture, taking it back to his hotel to clean it with a woman he’s trying to impress. Instead of winning the young woman’s affection, however, the gesture unlocks the bird’s undying loyalty and Tom finds himself faced with a penguin who won’t let him go. As he returns to Argentina with the penguin in tow, it’s the start of a strange and beautiful friendship. Against the backdrop of crackdowns from the new dictatorship, the penguin becomes a sounding board and an agent of change for Tom and, ultimately, the whole school. A delightful story full of wit, warmth, and subtle insight, The Penguin Lessons offers subtle insight into just how rewarding it can be to try doing the right thing.
