When Chrissie (Laura Linney) arrives in Ballygar for her mother’s funeral, she runs into old acquaintances at the local church. Lily (Maggie Smith), Eileen (Kathy Bates), and Dolly (Agnes O'Casey) are there to participate in a singing contest, hoping to win tickets for a trip to France. When the trio wins four tickets instead of just three, Chrissie – a skeptical traveler – joins them in place of her mother, who was their old friend. As the women set out on a journey each of them hopes will change their lives, along the way, old wounds are reopened, and the travelers are forced to confront their pasts.
