Showtimes July 4 - 10:
Celine Song’s follow-up to her gorgeous 2023 drama, Past Lives, draws from the traditions of Jane Austen, classic screwball comedies, and early 80s rom-coms. And yet, it’s very much its own thing: sharp, contemporary, and honest in its depiction of dating in 21st-century Manhattan.
Lucy (Dakota Johnson) is a matchmaker for upper-middle-class clients. Loaded with algorithms and checklists that have proved successful time and again, she’s a sought-after expert. Of course, she hasn’t yet found a match for herself, which doesn’t seem concerning until she encounters two men who reveal her insecurities. Harry (Pedro Pascal) is a wealthy charmer who seems to be her ideal suitor. But then there’s John (Chris Evans), a fledgling actor who barely scrapes by, but with whom there’s an admitted spark.
“To marry for love or money?” may be an age-old question, but Song once again reveals her ability to write stories that feel real and complicated, messy and vulnerable. If you’re seeing this film with hopes of glittery escapism, based on its A-list stars and a trailer that prominently features a cover of Madonna’s “Material Girl,” it does deliver. But be prepared for something a little more substantial. And that’s what’s so wonderful about it.
