This staggering American epic is the story of László Toth (Brody), a Jewish Hungarian architect who flees Europe at the end of the Second World War to rebuild his life in an unfamiliar land. Arriving in the US with barely anything to his name, he settles in Philadelphia, where he serendipitously has a chance encounter with Harrison Lee Van Buren (Guy Pearce), a wealthy businessman. who learns of his credentials and hires him for a complex building project. Tóth knows right away that Van Buren won’t fully understand the work he wants to do. But he’s also hungry, poor, and desperate to get his wife Erzsébet (Felicity Jones) to America, and working for Van Buren could be a secure way to realize many of his ambitions. The project also presents him with a dream that he never thought he could relive, though it comes with a dark cost, as László sacrifices more and more of himself to complete his exacting vision. Featuring one of the best performances of Adrian Brody’s career, a portrayal of Tóth that’s pained and lived in, The Brutalist is an expansive and stark look at the successes and challenges involved in making personal art in a capitalist system.

The Brutalist is presented in two acts with a 15 minute intermission.
