The origins of the Donald Trump playbook are probed in The Apprentice, director Ali Abbasi’s (Border, Holy Spider) provocative biographical drama. Sebastian Stan plays Trump in the ’70s and ‘80s, when he was determined to emerge from his powerful father’s shadow and make a name for himself in Manhattan real estate. It was in these earliest days of his career when he met one of the most important figures in his life: the political fixer Roy Cohn (Jeremy Strong). Seeing promise in young Donald, the influential attorney – who secured espionage convictions against Julius and Ethel Rosenberg and investigated suspected communists alongside Senator Joseph McCarthy – teaches his new acolyte his patented three lessons for winning: 1. Attack 2. Admit nothing, and 3. Always claim victory while never admitting defeat. Guiding principles that went on to form the core of Trump's ideology, The Apprentice shows how Cohn helped mold Trump, and what happened when Trump grew more powerful and no longer needed his teacher.
