Schoenbrun’s delirious third film is their most accomplished, most persuasive, and most playful movie yet. Here, the director’s perennial questions about gender identification are sublimated into a tribute to the slasher genre that also serves as an exploration of the nature of female desire and a manifesto for giving yourself permission to feel it. You don’t have to be a fan of the horror genre – or even like to be scared at the movies – to enjoy this one. While it may not be for everyone, if playfulness is your love language, then Miasma will be hard to shake.
