TED K

A mathematics prodigy who retired from his career as a university professor, Ted Kaczynski lived a life of almost complete seclusion deep in the Rocky Mountains. From his simple wooden cabin, he grew radicalized as he watched the world encroaching. He began with small acts of sabotage, like shooting at passing planes and breaking into the luxury cabin of neighbors with noise polluting snowmobiles. But from there, his actions expanded into a mail-bombing campaign that lasted from 1978 to 1995, killing three people and injuring 22 more. In return for a promise to cease the bombings, the Washington Post published his manifesto. In it, he revealed that his actions were part of an eco-fundamentalist crusade against modern technology.

Based on Kaczynski’s diaries and writings, Ted K blurs his inner world with his outer celebrity. It explores his seclusion and his principles, his complex familial relationships, his rage and his vengeance, all of which paint a disturbing picture. Yet what’s equally disturbing is that it simultaneously shows how he became part of the nation’s popular culture. From magazine covers and news programs, everyone knew the police-artist sketch of a figure in sunglasses and a hoodie. For a delirious moment, the “Unabomber” was as large in the national imagination as O.J. Simpson being chased in his Ford Bronco. With a dark intensity and an unnerving intimacy, actor Sharlto Copley partners with director Tony Stone to bring this figure to life in a way that is at once transgressive and thought-provoking.
