TÁR
Showtimes November 4 - 10:
We meet Lydia Tár at the height of her career, as she’s preparing both a book launch and a much-anticipated live performance of Mahler’s Fifth Symphony. She lives in Germany with her wife, Sharon (Nina Hoss), and their adopted daughter, Petra (Mila Bogojevic), and is principal conductor of the Berliner Philharmoniker. While she’s committed to her family, she’s a supremely gifted woman who at times pushes home life to the side in favor of losing herself to music and doing whatever it takes, with Shakespearean gusto, to retain her power. In what may be an acknowledgment of her magnetism and success, she and Sharon appear to have an understanding when it comes to extra-marital dalliances. But when her personal affairs grow called into question, Lydia’s life begins to unravel in a singularly modern way.
Far from a simple slice-of-life story, TÁR is a thriller, rooted in reality, that’s about how steep and crushing the fall can be for today’s celebrities. The match of larger-than-life actress to larger-than-life role is perfection. A shoo-in for Best Actress nominations, Blanchett doesn’t just excel. She makes the movie. “The actress may be just 53, but TÁR is already Blanchett’s Lear.” – Johnny Oleksinski, NY Post
