It’s Christmas in 1985, and Bill Furlong (Cillian Murphy) is working as a coal merchant to support his family. When he begins to discover disturbing secrets kept by a local convent, he is forced to confront a few truths of his own and to act against a silence that’s kept his small Irish community complicit with the Catholic Church for years. Revealing the story of Ireland’s Magdalene Laundries – asylums run by Roman Catholic institutions from the 1820s until 1996, ostensibly to reform “fallen young women” – Small Things Like These explores themes of guilt, moral courage, and ultimately, redemption.
