Roots of Fire
Final Show! September 28:
The contemporary Cajun music scene in Louisiana has found mainstream success with Grammy nominations and wins. But lately, shuttering venues and an aging fan base are leading to questions about the music’s future. Roots of Fire captures how five of today’s award-nominated musicians are fighting to keep Acadian tradition alive – by lending their voices to the discrimination that almost erased their customs, and by sharing the unique sounds that are evolving via the combination of deep history and the creativity of fresh talent. Featuring electrifying performances from the Pine Leaf Boys, Feufollet, Jourdan Thibodeaux et les Rôdailleurs, Nonsoir Catin, T’Monde, Anna Laura Deminston, and Roddie Romero, the crowd-pleasing Roots of Fire shows how playing amazing home-cooked music and preserving Cajun tradition for future generations can be a shared goal.
“Get ready to feel the blood rush into your perception of existence in directors’ Abby Nerendy Lavoi and Jeremy Lavoi’s profound Cajun music documentary Roots of Fire… The audience is in for a hurricane of fun… the music produces an unquenchable joy that is genuine and undeniable. Roots of Fire reminds me of Les Blank’s legendary documentaries on music and food. Like Blank, the Labois explore their subject with such passion it transcends the bounds of the specifics. The insights into life and existence are surprising and intense.” – Michael Talbot-Haynes, FILM THREAT
