Polite Society
Showtimes May 5 - 11:
The wickedly funny, cinematically exuberant POLITE SOCIETY is an Austen-esque tale that borrows from everything – romantic comedies, heist capers, Bollywood musicals, and spy flicks – to tell the story of a young woman who needs to save her sister from marrying a suitor who she perceives to be the wrong man.
Lena Khan (Ritu Arya) is an art school dropout with a Joan Jett shag who skulks around like a raccoon, wild eyes smudged with dark liner. She’s a mess and quite possibly depressed. But to her younger sister, Ria (Priya Kansara), Lena is perfect. That is, until she falls in love with a wealthy doctor named Salim (Akshay Khanna) and instantly transforms from a hoodie-wearing slob into a cardigan-clad fiancée.
Stubborn and determined, Ria is so hellbent on breaking up the betrothal that she’s willing to spy, lie, claw and kick. Enlisting the help of her two best friends, Alba (Ella Bruccoleri) and Clara (Seraphina Beh), Ria attempts to pull off the most ambitious of all wedding heists in the name of independence and sisterhood. An ingenious refashioning of British diasporic storytelling, Polite Society is an intelligent and wildly fun ride that’s chock full of fabulous performances, especially from newcomer and force of nature Priya Kansara.
