Academy Award Nominee: Best International Feature

Our world is a truly mysterious place, and even more so through the eyes of an animal. Eo, a donkey with compassionate and melancholy eyes, experiences the joy and pain that all must face in their walk through life.

Eo’s on-screen story begins performing in a traveling circus alongside his loving caretaker, Kassandra.  A group of animal rights activists successfully liberate all of the animals from the troupe, but rather than be shoved into a trailer toward an unknown fate, Eo escapes and takes its fate under its own hooves.  The resulting adventure leads the four legged protagonist through town and countryside where they come across all manner of man and animal kind.  Our world as seen through Eo’s eyes is contorted by the sumptuous and other-worldly cinematography, while the magnificent score and sound design assist the viewer in imagining our world as experienced by a loving and curious creature.

Director Jerzy Skolimowski was once a junior member of the 1950’s Polish new wave film movement.  Now 84, Skolimowski has provided an update to Robert Bresson’s beloved Au Hasard Balthazar, a film which also follows a donkey as it passes from owner to owner.  Like Balthazar, Eo’s travels are a mix of peace and danger, and they reveal the natures of humans and animals alike.
