Living up to a landmark film is no easy task, but Eggers’ Nosferatu delivers, grabbing you from the first scene to the last. In it, Nicholas Hoult plays Thomas, a recently married man who sets out to Transylvania to close a real estate deal with the mysterious Count Orlok (Bill Skarsgård). Little does he know, the count is a bloodthirsty vampire who’s fixated on Thomas’s young bride, Emma (Lily-Rose Depp), and his land purchase in Wisborg, Germany, is an attempt to get closer to her. As the count travels across land and sea to his new home, he brings danger and devastation to everyone he encounters along the way. Lush and visually arresting, with chillingly memorable set pieces and appropriately outsized performances from a superb cast, Eggers’ Nosferatu is best seen without distractions, in a movie theater, preferably on a chilly night of howling winds or lashing rain.
