In this rousing metaphysical drama from Japanese Brazilian director Edson Oda, a man interviews five unborn souls to determine which one can be given life on Earth.

Will (Winston Duke) oversees the evaluation of unborn souls and chooses which ones get to enter the world as new life. To do this, he puts them through a rigorous nine-day process. As new candidates arrive, if they’re lucky, they move on, and if they’re unlucky, they face oblivion. As he assesses their different personalities and attitudes, Will eventually faces a challenge in the form of free-spirited Emma (Zazie Beetz), a candidate who is not like the others. After meeting her, something is “off” in Will. His equilibrium is shattered. Forced to turn within and reckon with his own tumultuous past, he tries a bold new path forward.

The strength of Nine Days is in the mood Oda sets, the clarity with which he establishes this world, how it operates, and its rules and traditions. Making his feature-film debut after a series of highly acclaimed and award-winning short films and music videos, he delivers a heartfelt and meditative vision of human souls in limbo, aching to be born against unimaginable odds, yet hindered by forces beyond their will.
