Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris
Showtimes July 29 - August 4:
Based on the 1958 novel, Mrs. ‘Arris Goes to Paris, writer/director Anthony Fabian creates a charming modern-day fairytale with this film. Oscar nominee Lesley Manville stars as Ada Harris, a widowed cleaning lady who falls madly in love with a Christian Dior gown that’s hanging in the bedroom of a wealthy client. She’s not the type to brood over misfortune or to complain about her circumstances, so instead of simply admiring the dress, she pragmatically plans to buy a piece of haute-couture for herself.
She takes on extra work, saves as much as she can, and even tries her luck at the race track to increase her funds. When she’s finally raised enough, she makes her way to Paris to visit the famed House of Dior. Yet when she arrives, she is met with a series of surprising setbacks, not least of which is Dior’s intimidating Madame Colbert (Isabelle Hubert), who bristles at the very notion of a common charlady wearing haute couture. A movie for the romantics – not the cynics – in the audience, Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris is an engaging wisp of magical realism that may leave viewers uttering one of its heroine’s oft-used refrains, “Oh, that’s lovely.”
