Moonage Daydream

Showtimes October 7 - 13:

David Bowie’s bright orange hair, brilliantly inventive fashion sense, frank bisexuality, and almost casual mastery of divergent musical idioms made him an idol to restless youth and an irresistible puzzle for the media. While it’s not the only document about his life, Moonage Daydream sets itself apart by being the first to work in full cooperation with Bowie’s estate. With over 5 million pieces of memorabilia, it’s the biggest treasure trove an adventurous filmmaker could wish for, and director Brett Morgen uses it to full advantage, telling Bowie’s story in a hurtling, multimedia fashion that dissolves a lot of our usual categories for thinking about the artist. With Bowie himself providing the narration, NY Times critic A.O. Scott writes that the film’s effect is, in a sense, “more séance than biography,” conjuring a lively, spirit-filled portrait and bringing it to life through cinema. Pulsing with color and music, and circling around ideas about time, consciousness, wonder, and the universe, this film was made to be seen on a big screen, where the artist can be remembered larger than life.
