(US / 2021 / Directed by Fran Kranz)
Years after an unspeakable tragedy occurs between their children, two sets of parents (Jason Isaacs & Martha Plimption, Reed Birney & Ann Dowd) agree to talk privately in an attempt to move forward. An impressive screenwriting and directorial debut from acclaimed actor Fran Kranz, Mass imagines what it looks like to process grief, look for answers, and find the strength to persevere.
This film’s emotional impact lies in its rigor, its impeccable direction, and in the stunning performances delivered by every member of its cast. Using the formal confines of his set – the common rooms of a small, nondescript church – to his advantage, Franz creates tension and ambiance filled with awkwardness from the outset. Will choir practice interfere with the parents’ conversation? Will they need food? Are the chairs placed appropriately? As the parents enter the room and begin to talk, Mass’s consideration for how people communicate with one another results in a rare dramatization of the lasting effects of gun violence. Conveying something that even the best documentaries on the subject can’t quite capture, and that feels truthful without being exploitative, it’s a thoughtful, beautifully executed ode to our flawed and messy humanity.
