(Iceland, Sweden, Poland / 2021 / Directed by Valdimar Jóhannsson)
Way out on an isolated hillside, something is spooking the horses. Prowling and plodding through the misty hills, it arrives at the farm of Maria (Noomi Rapace) and Ingvar (Hilmir Snær Gudnason), a hardworking, taciturn couple who’s grieving the loss of a child. As their ewes huddle together in the barn, something happens and the radio plays a Christmas song. When one gives birth to a strange human hybrid, the immediately lovestruck Maria and Ingvar name her Ada and adopt her as their own.
For a time, things go well, and the new parents are contented. But Ingvar’s brother Pétar soon surfaces out of nowhere, dropping right into the middle of the baffling scenario. Tensions start to grow as he questions what Maria and Ingvar are doing. A modern-day narrative that plays like an old folktale, Lamb is ultimately about the rash decisions of people willing to do anything to preserve an idyllic life.
