Julia

(US / 2021 / Directed by Julie Cohen & Betsy West)

SHOWTIMES DECEMBER 20 - 23:

Born in 1912, Julia Child defied expectations for women of her time by traveling abroad, mastering French cuisine, and then, in her fifties, becoming a celebrity on American television. In their first feature since the acclaimed RBG, Oscar-nominated directors Julie Cohen and Betsy West present a touching portrait of the iconic chef.

Julia had two loves in her life: her husband, Paul Child, and the world of French cuisine. After studying as the only woman in her class at Le Cordon Bleu, Julia spent years collaborating with co-writers Simone Beck and Louisette Bertholle on the massive two-volume book Mastering the Art of French Cooking. Her publisher expected it to flop, but when Julia did a cooking demonstration on Boston Public Television in 1962, she gained her own show instead and a star was born.

Cohen and West’s film makes great use of WGBH’s archival treasure trove, bringing Julia to life at various moments in her show’s history. In its early days The French Chef was recorded live to tape, forcing her to become an expert improviser. Over time, out of determination to hold the audience’s attention, she developed the solid voice and persona that remains irresistible for viewers – and mimics – today.

While her goal was always to inspire home chefs, the film goes deeper to explore how Julia adapted to changes in cultural shifts over food, feminism, and homosexuality, and how she fought ageism by staying active until the end of her life.
