With its unpredictable climate and wind gusts that can reach up to 231 miles per hour, Mount Washington has claimed over 150 lives in the past 150 years, making it one of the deadliest mountains in the country. In preparation for a late-season ascent of the 6,288-foot peak, in October of 2010, Pam Bales (Watts) loaded her pack with extra layers and a pair of snow googles. She’d been volunteering with the Pemigewasset Valley Search and Rescue Team for five years and was headed out to train with a heavy pack. Around 5,500 feet, she reached the junction with the Gulfside Trail, where she noticed fresh footprints in the snow. Made by sneakers, rather than by sturdy hiking boots, she knew someone was in trouble. As a blizzard approached, Bales set out to find the stranded hiker and get him down the mountain. A survival tale that highlights the courage and tenacity of the human spirit, Infinite Storm is a thrilling testament to the bravery and fortitude of the woman at its center.
