Before Hamilton, Lin-Manuel Miranda burst onto the scene with an ode to his hometown. Now, the cinematic adaptation of his Tony award-winning musical, In the Heights, seeks to cement its place in movie history.

Set in the gentrifying Manhattan neighborhood of Washington Heights, the aromas from a cafecito caliente hang in the air just outside of the 181st Street subway stop. It’s summer in the city, which means it’s hot, humid, and the hormones are racing.

A kaleidoscope of people animate the tight-knit neighborhood, and at the intersection of it all is a likable, magnetic bodega owner, Usnavi (Anthony Ramos), who saves every penny from his daily grind as he aspires for and sings about a better life. But with rents rising, newcomers entering, and older generations transitioning out, the community is shifting. And like a ticking clock, a blackout is approaching that may push it to its brink.

Combining Lin-Manuel Miranda’s kinetic music and lyrics with Jon M. Chu’s lively and authentic eye for storytelling, In the Heights is a riot of color, wordplay, music, and dance. Filmed on-site in New York City, it captures a story that’s very much of its place, yet universal in its experience.
