I’m Still Here

Academy Award Winner: Best Foreign Feature
Held over for two final shows

March 8 - 9:

At the start of the film, life in the merrily crowded Paiva household is warm and jovial, even though life outside includes dealing with military spot checks and an ever-looming threat of arrest. For the family, things suddenly change when this potential catches up to them, and their father Rubens (Selton Mello), a former congressman, is suddenly ushered away to provide a mysterious deposition to military interrogators. Soon after, officers come for his wife, Eunice (a superb Fernanda Torres), holding her for 12 days in a windowless prison as they try to persuade her to incriminate friends and associates accused of left-wing activities. When she emerges from prison, Eunice is transformed, embarking on a journey to expose the government’s illegal activities. Giving equal weight to the personal and the political, Eunice remains a loving and fiercely protective mother as she leads her courageous campaign against the dictatorship. An engrossing, deeply moving film from director Walter Salles (The Motorcycle Diaries, Central Station), I’m Still Here is a testament to the power ordinary people can have when the tempests of history come calling.
