Showtimes December 5 - 11:
Based on the bestselling novel by Maggie O’Farrell, Hamnet imagines what life may have looked like for William Shakespeare (Paul Mescal) and his wife Anne or “Agnes” (Jessie Buckley) in the early years of their marriage. Establishing a female perspective that puts The Bard in a supporting role, much of the story is told through Agnes’s eyes. A woman in tune with the forest she grew up in, the early scenes of her courtship with William are naturalistic, rendered through a lush cinematography that harmonizes with Buckley’s untamable performance. But even more than the unique bond between her and William, it’s the strength of their love for their children that will move you. In 1596, the couple loses their 11-year-old son, Hamnet (Jacobi Jupe) while William is away. A name used interchangeably at the time with “Hamlet,” the story uses that fact as the basis for connecting the family’s tragedy to one of Shakespeare’s most famous works. Shot with a poet’s eye and scored with an ear for both thunder and nuance, Hamnet features two of the finest performances this season from Buckley and Mescal. Together, they carry you through an engulfing tribute to art’s potential to heal. But be prepared. The emotional punch of this film is real.
