There are no easy answers in this poetic meditation on the symbiosis between mothers and children, and humans and the sea. Adapted by Shane Crowley and based on a story he wrote with Fodhla Cronin O’Reilly, Emily Watson stars as a mother whose son returns home after a long stint away. When she’s questioned by the police about his whereabouts one night, she tells a simple lie that rips her family and their close-knit community apart. Ultimately a movie about the collision between a mother’s fidelity and her moral conscience, Emily Watson is terrific at telegraphing how these instincts grind against each other to terrifying ends.
