Rita Moro Castro (Saldaña) is a Mexico City attorney whose brilliant defense strategies have kept many clients out of jail. When her reputation draws the attention of the drug kingpin, Manitas Del Monte (Gascón), he enlists her services. Tasked with staging his disappearance and helping him transition to a secret new life as a woman, Rita is paid to arrange an itinerary of under-the-table procedures with the world’s best surgeons, and to plan for the welfare of the wife (Gomez) and kids Manitas is leaving behind.
Once everything is in place and Manitas’s death has been stage, Emilia Pérez is born. With her new identity, Emilia is afforded the ability to create a whole new life for herself, and even to rectify some of the wrongs Manitas caused while living as a criminal. But the past begins to creep back, threatening to undo everything she and Rita have worked so hard to achieve. Upending expectations with its ingenious plot twists, eye popping spectacle, and inspired musical numbers, Emilia Pérez expresses the dreams and anxieties of an entire culture struggling against corruption, fear, and stereotypes. Not to mention it’s a spectacle that’s not to be missed on the big screen.
