COMING SOON - Showtimes July 18 - 24:
Set in early 2020, at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, the fictional town of Eddington, New Mexico, is just beginning to mandate its social distancing and masking rules. Sheriff Joe Cross (Joaquin Phoenix) would rather hold onto the status quo, but Eddington is far from an isolated community, and it’s hard to keep anything, let alone a virus, at bay. For one, a tech giant named “solidgoldmagikarp” is planning to build a massive data center nearby with the support of Mayor Ted Garcia (Pedro Pascal). At the same time, national concerns are pushing unrest into the community, with Black Lives Matter and anti-police protests popping up in the streets. Even in Joe’s home, his wife (Emma Stone) and mother-in-law (Deirdre O’Connell) are falling down conspiracy theory rabbit holes with little else to do but take deep dives on the Internet under lockdown.
As Joe is called out to keep the peace in this shifting landscape, he finds himself increasingly at odds with Mayor Garcia. While it’s unclear whether he’s more fueled by their opposing views on masks or by jealousy over a relationship the mayor had with his wife years before, Sheriff Cross launches a campaign to unseat his rival and become mayor of Eddington, himself.
If you prefer a story with clear divides between liberal and conservative politics, we want to warn you that you won’t find them here. But that’s the point. More interested in the personal dramas that define our us-versus-them outlooks, in the media we consume, and in the impulses that consume us, Ari Aster paints a catharctically messy portrait of our country today. It's not for nothing that Eddington arrives with the tagline “Hindsight is 2020.” Looking back at the early days of the pandemic from the bottom of the rift that America is still stuck in, this anti-Western is a darkly comedic reminder of just how thoroughly we may be failing to meet the moment.
