Using non-professional actors has long been a tool filmmakers have employed to add a note of authenticity to their work. And yet, with East of Wall, writer/director Kate Beecroft elevates this concept to greater heights. Cinematically and narratively rich, her film takes great care to reflect the deeper reality at the heart of its story, delivering an authentic portrait of female resilience in the “New West” that’s both inspired and played by the women who truly live it. At its center is Tabatha, a young, rebellious rancher who rescues and resells horses. Dealing with unresolved grief after the death of her husband, she’s facing financial uncertainty while trying to provide refuge for her own fractured family and a group of wayward teens. It’s not an easy life, but Beecroft’s film elevates the grit and grind of a Badlands ranch to honor the tough, sun-blasted women who live there.
