Carmen
Showtimes May 19 - 25:
To escape a murderous cartel, the captivating young Carmen (Melissa Berrera) is heading northbound from Mexico. But her route traverses a dangerous area patrolled by both the US government and groups of fanatical Americans. Among them is Aidan (Paul Mescal), a former Marine who has been dragged into the ignoble patrol as a means of earning money for his impoverished family. In a standoff that goes awry, he meets Carmen, and their paths – and their hearts – converge. Fleeing the scene, they take the wheel with Los Angeles on the horizon. There, they seek refuge in a nightclub run by an infamous family friend named Masilda (Rossy de Palma). But as the song goes, “l’amour est un oiseau rebelle” – and perhaps love may not be enough when the fates aren’t far behind.
First time director Benjamin Millepied is a ballet dancer who choreographed and performed in Darren Aronofsky’s Black Swan and held the esteemed position of Director of Dance at the Paris Opera Ballet. In his version of Carmen, dynamic and fiery dance performances replace Bizet’s classic arias, accompanied by a powerful soundtrack by composer Nicholas Britell. Epic in scope and striking in its vision, this is a romance for the ages.
