Screening + Q&A with director Samuel Dunning
Inspired by films like Waiting for Guffman, This is Spinal Tap, and Best in Show, Canoe Dig It? brings mockumentary to New England by showcasing a fictional canoeing competition in northern Maine. Exploring the real-life sport of “Freestyle Canoeing” -- a form of performative canoeing best described as “canoe dancing” – it follows competitive paddlers as they spin, dip, and flow in sync to the music of their choice. Featuring a cadre of quirky yet curiously relatable competitors, it showcases a cutthroat perfectionist, a backwoods natural, an aging underdog, a squabbling couple, and a hard-rocking bartender. They’ve all been competing against each other for years, and they’ve come together once more to see who will win the blue ribbon at the Moosewood Regional Finals. What will help the top Freestyler win? Athleticism? Technique? Core strength? Song choice? Come answer these and other burning questions while enjoying a comedy made by and for New Englanders.
