Showtimes October 31 - November 6:
Since his mother passed away, Teddy (Jesse Plemons) has become an extremely “online” young man, whose Internet research has introduced him to ideas about aliens on earth, secret societies, elite cabals, and deep-state shenanigans. Along with his impressionable, neurodivergent cousin Don (Aidan Delbis), he lives in a house that’s a rambling maze of knick-knacks and detritus from past generations. On the surface, the cousins appear to be sympathetic characters — two young men living in the shadow of familial loss. But behind closed doors, they’re hatching a plan to kidnap local CEO Michelle Fuller (Emma Stone), who they believe to be an alien masquerading as a human. Teddy has a personal grudge against Fuller, given that his mother (Alicia Silverstone) was once part of a trial experiment involving a new drug her company was testing, and it did not go well. To get revenge and/or interrupt what they believe is an Andromedan plot to destroy humankind, the cousins are intent on stopping the skinny, fabulously wealthy girlboss. In an era where it’s all too easy to release simple, didactic “eat the rich” stories, Lanthimos’s comedy-thriller zeroes in on the cognitive dissonance of our time in a new and compelling way. A valuable film to watch for the fantastic acting displayed by its central trio, we also doubt you’ll forget its poignant conclusion.
