Breaking Bread
Showtimes March 18 - 23:
This delicious documentary follows Arab and Jewish chefs in Haifa, Israel as they collaborate in the kitchen and connect – free from political and religious boundaries – through a shared love of food.
After becoming the first Muslim Arab to win Israel’s MasterChef, Dr. Nof Atamna-Ismael founded the A-Sham Arabic Food Festival – a festival that invites Arab and Jewish chefs to celebrate their shared culinary history as they exchange stories, recipes, and techniques. From the chain-smoking Shlomi Meir, whose 60-year-old Eastern European restaurant was founded by his late grandfather, to the youthful Ali Khattib, whose specialties honor his grandmother’s Syrian heritage, the chefs share a passionate appetite for discovering flavors and sharing techniques. And the camera captures every delectable entrée they concoct with alluring precision – from mussakhan (Palestinian roasted sumac chicken atop a bed of caramelized onions) to Atamna-Ismaeel’s manti (delicate lamb dumplings). A celebration of the region’s diverse cuisines and people, Breaking Bread offers a taste of rich culinary traditions that will leave you both inspired and wanting more.
