Another Round
Now Showing. Ends January 21st.
Thomas Vinterberg (The Celebration, Far From the Madding Crowd, Commune, The Hunt) and Mads Mikkelsen reunite for this boisterous and sobering comedy about how men deal (and don’t deal) with aging. Four friends, all teachers, discuss a fringe theory that maintaining a blood alcohol level of 0.5 makes a person more creative and relaxed. The group embarks on an experiment in “self-improvement” through drinking, and though early results are positive, they discover the limits and experience the full results of their hypothesis.
Martin (Mads Mikkelsen), in what began as a humorous discussion among friends, is the first to put daily drinking to the test. Depressed and lost within his marriage, Martin begins to come out of his shell much to the surprise of his wife and students. His friends join in the experiment, but Martin soon decides to take things further, upping his daily BAC to 1.0. As the group proceeds, some of the friends can't keep up, and others fall over the edge convinced they’re in perfect control. Underlying it all is a shared, unnerving suspicion that many of them may not have grown fully into their adult lives. As they take their experiment further, issues that have been simmering for years come to the fore and the men are faced with a choice: reckon with their behavior or continue on the same course. Directed with insight and energy by Vinterberg, the film culminates in an ecstatic ending featuring a performance by Mikkelsen that you won’t soon forget.
