All the Beauty and the Bloodshed
Academy Award Nominee - Best Documentary Feature
Showtimes February 24 - March 2:
Laura Poitras began filming this documentary three years ago as photographer Nan Goldin was marshaling a protest against Purdue Pharma, the maker of OxyContin. For Goldin, this was a deeply personal crusade. As someone who developed a dependency that lasted several years after being prescribed the drug, she narrowly escaped being one of the half million Americans who’ve died from an opioid overdose. Doubly personal is the fact that Purdue’s owners, the Sackler family, have long whitewashed their company’s name by donating to art museums… including those that collect Goldin’s work.
Following the artist as she leads demonstrations at the Met, the Guggenheim, and the Louvre, All the Beauty and the Bloodshed captures the very real impacts of her bold campaign. Yet this movie isn’t just a document about Goldin’s efforts to bring down the Sacklers. In Poitras’s capable hands, it’s an expansive portrait that shows how her work and activism are inexorably rooted in all of the beautiful influences and tragedies that shaped her life. With a propulsive energy, it encapsulates the righteousness of Goldin’s work and invites you to engage.
