Teyana Taylor is a force of nature as Inez, a previously incarcerated mother who kidnaps her six-year-old son from foster care and seeks redemption by vowing to provide him with a better life. Holding onto their secret and to each other, mother and son set out to reclaim their sense of home, identity, and stability in a city that can make it hard to survive.

Their story spans 10 years, and her son Terry is played by three different actors. Josiah Cross, who plays the 17-year-old version, is excellent as an achingly awkward teenager searching for his identity while carrying the weight of his mother’s expectations on his shoulders. Offering an honest depiction of people’s struggles against the outside forces weighing them down, A Thousand and One is an elegant ode to the power of family in an ever-changing world.
