A love story set in the final chapter of a couple’s life together, A Stage of Twilight centers on Barry (William Sadler), a man who receives fatal news about his health, and his wife Cora (Karen Allen). Barry’s reaction to the news leads him to announce that he would like to rent a trailer in the middle of the woods so he can die alone, with quiet dignity. But this decision doesn’t sit well with Cora, who can’t bear to lose him earlier than she has to. As they engage in a dance of wills, their struggle is further complicated by a neighbor boy. Somewhat of a surrogate son for the childless couple, he’s reached a critical crossroads for his own future and needs their attention.

Unfurling at a gentle but engaging pace and featuring many moments of subtle humor, this articulate independent feature is brought to life by lovely cinematography, seasoned actors, and a director with a talent for capturing emotional intimacy. Inspired by her experiences during the death of her father, her goal in making the film was to pose, but never answer, the questions: “Who gets to decide how, when, and with whom you should die?” It’s a rare eye that won’t have at least a little tear jerked from it by the end, but A Stage of Twilight keeps it simple, and you’ll come away with much to think about.
