Bilingual psychiatrist, Dr. Lilian Steiner (Jodie Foster), is an American living in Paris. Recently divorced and a new grandmother, she’s on edge even before one of her patients, Paula (Virginie Efira), commits suicide. Out of sympathy, she attends the patient’s shiva, but her presence sends Paula’s husband (Mathieu Amalric) into a dramatic swoon. How could she, the psychiatrist, not have prevented the suicide, he suggests. But his actions begin to make Dr. Lilian suspect a murder most foul. In amateur pursuit of the mystery, she begins to enlist the help of her skeptical mentor (played by Frederick Wiseman), and to collaborate with her ex-husband (Daniel Auteuil). Auteuil and Foster have fantastic chemistry as, together, they pursue the murderer in this elegant, character-driven thriller.
