Naveen (Karan Soni) is a young man from a traditional Indian family whose dreamboat of a boyfriend, Jay (Jonathan Groff), is a sensitive and successful American photographer who was raised by Indian parents. Though Naveen’s family is outwardly accepting of his sexuality, he’s not as sure what they would think about him having a white boyfriend, so he keeps Jay hidden. That is, until they get engaged and must confront the differences in practice. A wonderful film that tenderly explores cultural and generational differences within a single family, A Nice Indian Boy speaks back to social taboos with humor, sweetness, and depth. It’s a beautiful reminder that “the bigness of love” can help us adapt, change, and accept each other across differences.
